Mary Byatt

Saturday 30th March 2019 – Friday 10th May 2019

Sketch of stone archways, by Mary Byatt

Mary Byatt took up botanical illustration about thirty years ago, towards the end of her career as a biology teacher.   She has studied under several recognised botanical illustrators, notably Claire Dalby, Mark Fothergill, Michael Hickey, Jane Cockburn, Christopher Grey-Wilson and Jenny Jowett.    She had a one-man show in Gordonstoun in 1993 and has also exhibited at Logie Steading Art Gallery, Broughton Gallery by Biggar, the McEwan Gallery at Ballater, and Just Art in Fochabers.   In 1996 she gained a gold medal at a Royal Horticultural Society show in London for a series of paintings of rhododendrons of Blackhills, Lhanbryde.   Since then she has also been awarded silver-gilt, silver and bronze medals by the RHS.

Painting in oils is a more recent venture, inspired by Tony Campbell and Peter McLaren and this resulted in a one-man shows in the Elgin Museum in 2008 and 2014. Since the death of her husband, David, in 2012, Mary has been on several painting holidays to Italy, tutored by many artists including the renowned portrait painter, Fiona Graham-Mackay.
