Treasures of Moray: What’s new with Moray Finds?

A talk by Dr George Prew\, Treasur e Trove Unit
\n
This talk gives a quick overview of how the Treasure Trove system works\, what the Treasure Trove Unit does\, who they are\, and some of the big changes to the unit over t he last year\, before showing and talking through particularly interesting cases of objects which have come through the process from Moray in the la st few years.
\n
Dr George Prew is a Tre asure Trove Officer focusing on Moray\, Orkney\, Shetland\, and The Lothia ns. His research interests centre on dress and death\, as brought out in h is recently-concluded PhD thesis which analyses communities in Iron Age It aly through how they dressed their corpses. Within the Treasure Trove Unit \, he has a particular interest in Late Medieval enamelled objects\, heral dry\, small lead finds\, and shot.

A talk by L. Bruce Keith
\n
Bruc e Keith with regale us with highlights from his latest book\, “Scotland be neath the surface”. It’s a subterranean odyssey exploring the natural and man-made heritage under our feet\, from natural caves to hollow mountains for hydro power generation\, from railway tunnels to underground tanks an d bunkers and from fossils to the mining of fossil fuels.
\n
Bruce Ke ith is a retired chartered surveyor and chartered environmentalist. He sta rted his career on several Aberdeenshire estates before joining the Depart ment of Agriculture in Edinburgh. In 1996 he migrated south of the border as Chief Surveyor with English Nature. Bruce retired ten years ago as Head of Property at SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc – the Hydro Board) – the largest renewable energy company in the UK and Ireland.

Moray Walkin g Festival: Geology Walk in Quarry Wood

The Victorian Elgi n geological controversy\, a 100 million year mystery!

Join Elgin Museum Geology Group Volunteer Dave Longstaff on a 2.5 – 3.5 hour w alk in Quarry Wood. We’ll visit some abandoned sandstone quarries looking at the geology and discussing some controversies which confounded Victoria n geologists 150 years ago.
\n
Meeting at the car park at Leggat Quar ry\, we’ll walk to Rosebrae and Cutties Hillock Quarries. This will involv e a round walk of about 3 km which includes a gentle 0.5 km uphill walk to almost the top of Quarry Wood but following good paths.
\n
In Cuttie s Hillock Quarry around 150 years ago fossil reptiles were found only a fe w feet above rock layers where fossil fish scales occurred\, were the rock s of the same age? This was a question which interested many Victorian geo logists and drew scientists from all over the U.K to Quarry Wood. A clue c an be found in Rosebrae Quarry where a gap in the geological record can be examined\, a 100 million year geological time gap\, a cranny where your f inger can span 100 million years!
\n
Near to Cutties Hillock Quarry w e can also see evidence from the last ice-age\, grooves in small exposures of rocks created by the last ice sheets to cover Moray\, glacial striae t o those who remember school geography lessons!

Moray Walking Festival: Hopeman: Fossil dunes and trackways

Join Elgin Museum Geology Group Volunteer Dave Longstaff on this full day event to examine features of the late Permian Hopeman Sandstone Formation\, including fossilised dunes and animal trackways.
\n
Start ing at the Hopeman beach huts\, we will see relicts of aeolian barchan and possible star dunes before examining a stretch of coastline that shows sm all faults\, a range of soft sediment deformation features\, fluvial and l acustrine sandstones\, abandoned millstones and quarries\, trace fossils a nd other sedimentary features.
\n
After lunch in Cove Bay (NJ 1594 70 11) around low tide of 14:49 we will look at a well-studied fault zone and post-glacial caves. We will then go to Clashach Quarry to examine fossili sed reptile footprints and glacial features before descending to the coast via a short path to visit an old sandstone quarry (1781)\, the old Clasha ch port\, Jock Muldoon’s Cave and see some beautifully displayed sandstone cross-bedding and relicts of quarrying.
\n
When the excursion finish es\, we will return to the beach huts via the coastal path\; the expected time back at cars is 1600-1630.

A talk by Dr George Prew-Stell\, T reasure Trove Officer
\n
This talk give s a quick overview of how the Treasure Trove system works and what the Tre asure Trove Unit does\, before providing an update on some of the latest a rchaeological finds from Moray.
\n
Dr Ge orge Prew-Stell is a Treasure Trove Officer focusing on Moray\, Orkney\, S hetland\, and The Lothians. His research interests centre on dress and dea th\, as brought out in his recently-concluded PhD thesis which analyses co mmunities in Iron Age Italy through how they dressed their corpses. Within the Treasure Trove Unit\, he has a particular interest in Late Medieval e namelled objects\, heraldry\, small lead finds\, and shot.
